The government proposes doing for the art of newspapers what it did for the science of deepwater oil drilling. Thanks but no thanks.
Jeff Jarvis is right: These ideas are terrible. The situation with the newspaper industry is in no way similar to an area of the economy where I do so a strong role for government intervention, which would be the transition away from fossil fuels and into alternative forms of energy. In that analogy, newspapers are British Petroleum and iPads are wind farms. And in this case, the FTC is, metaphorically speaking, suggesting taxing "the wind farms" to prop up "BP" and its outdated methods of drilling.
