Michelle Obama stars in pro-Trump digital ad in PA
A pro-Donald Trump super PAC says it is targeting Pennsylvania with a $1 million buy of targeted digital advertising, featuring a powerful spot that uses Michelle Obama's words against Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.
That ad, called "Can't Run Her House," became so controversial that the Clinton campaign lawyers sent "cease and desist" letters to Florida television stations in Tampa, Orlando and Gainesville that were running the spot from Make America Number 1 PAC. The effort to halt the ad did not succeed.
It features footage of Michelle Obama speaking during in 2007, making what was interpreted by some at the time to be an attack on Clinton, then in a nasty primary fight with Barack Obama. "One of the important aspects of this race is role-modeling what good families should look like. And my view is, if you can't run your own house, you certainly can't run the White House. You can't do it," Michelle Obama says.
(The Obamas said at the time there was no intent to refer to the extramarital affairs of former President Bill Clinton, as some supposed, and a fuller look at the first lady's remarks makes it clear that she was talking about scheduling campaign trips for her husband so she was still able to see the couple's daughters at home in Chicago.)
Nonetheless, the PAC's testing found that "Can't Run Her House" moved numbers. It increased the share of moderate women voters expressing "very unfavorable" opinions of Hillary Clinton by eight percentage points, and also was effective with Latinas.
