About the Bruins: They entered the season as the five-time defending NCAA champions, and they defended those titles and their turf, as the Final Four was held in the Los Angeles Sports Arena ... Bibby, the only senior in the rotation, was originally drafted by the Knicks. He joined the Sixers in September 1976, about a month before Julius Erving did. That team lost to Walton's Portland Trail Blazers in the 1977 Finals after winning the first two games ... In his first career NCAA tourney game, Walton took one shot (he made it) in 20 minutes as the Bruins drubbed Weber State by 32. In his next three games, he totaled 76 points and 52 rebounds ... Personally, Walton did not lose a game (high school, college freshman, varsity) for five years, from the middle of his junior year of high school to the middle of his senior year in college ... UCLA's record 88-game winning streak had started the previous season (Jan. 30, 1971) with a victory over UC Santa Barbara following a 89-82 loss at Notre Dame.
