Sen. Pat Toomey (R., Pa.) plans to vote at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, leaving it until near the end of Election Day to presumably tell the public whom he will support for president.
Unless Toomey makes a surprise announcement before then, his voting time means millions of Pennsylvanians will head to the polls to decide whether to reelect the senator without knowing if he will vote for his party's presidential nominee, Donald Trump. Polls in Pennsylvania close at 8 p.m.
Toomey, locked in a tight race against Democrat Katie McGinty, has for months declined to take a firm stand on Trump.
He has ruled out supporting Democrat Hillary Clinton. But when it comes to Trump he has been less clear. Toomey has criticized many of the GOP nominee's divisive comments, but has also said the developer is likely to sign some good legislation -- such as repealing the Affordable Care Act.
Toomey has said that he feels like many other voters, stuck between two bad choices, and argues that his refusal to quickly fall in line with his party's nominee shows his independence. Democrats have attacked him as being calculating.
Toomey is running in one of the country's toughest Senate races, one in which he could not afford to alienate either firm Trump supporters or suburban moderates.
He will vote near his Allentown-area home.
