Schools protesters: Staying put outside mayor's office until SRC vote - on Thursday

UPDATE 4:07 p.m.: The chanting has ended, but the protesters are still here - and they say they're not going anywhere soon.

About a dozen demonstrators opposed to school closings are cozying up outside Mayor Nutter's office on the second floor of City Hall. Their plan is to stay until Thursday, when the School Reform Commission votes on the proposed closings of 29 schools across the city.

The administration did not immediately respond to a request for comment about how the demonstration will be handled and whether the protesters would be arrested if they try to stay overnight. The NAACP's Jerry Mondesire, who is participating in the demonstration, said he's already budgeted money to pay for bail.

About a dozen demonstrators from Action United, a group that opposes Philly's proposed school closings, have linked arms outside Mayor Nutter's office in City Hall and are chanting, "One-year moratorium."

Security is surrounding the protest and has shut the door to the northeast stairs on the second floor, where the administration offices are.
