Study of Fire Department will soon be complete

A study that will help determine how much of a fire department the city needs will be complete in mid-January, Uri Monson, executive director of the Pennsylvania Intergovernmental Cooperation Authority [PICA] said today.

The city asked PICA in October 2010 to fund an independent study to assess the Fire Department's management, operations, structure, system performance and service.

Additionally, the study will also examine response times, which have reportedly increased according to an article in an August issue of the Daily News.

Monson provided the update during a monthly PICA board meeting. He said there are roughly 60 recommendations and the study identifies ways in which the city can reach a "higher efficiency level" with the resources it currently has.

Briefings on the study will also take place sometime in January; a specific date has not been set.

"Everyone sat at the table and the process was done in the right way," Monson said. "This has never been done."
