Comcast now the biggest market-cap company in Pa., map shows

Coal, railroads and steel companies defined Pennsylvania's economy over many decades.

Now?

Cable and media.

Comcast Corp., the nation's largest cable-TV operator which also owns the NBCUniversal entertainment conglomerate,  takes the prize as Pennsylvania's most-valuable company based on its market capitalization, according to a national map from Broadview Networks.

The map, based on data from early November, shows the largest publicly traded company in each state in the nation. The market-cap figure is based on multiplying a company's stock price by the number of its outstanding shares. For Comcast, the amount was $147 billion.

Some others.  Extra Space Storage Inc. is the most valuable company in Utah, Las Vegas Sands is the most valuable in Nevada, and Yum! Brands Inc. is the most valuable in Kentucky.

Who says the Pennsylvania economy isn't modernizing?
