Golden Globe nominees set

‘The Artist’ dominates film; cable owns TV drama category

Silence is Golden. The French silent film The Artist was the early favorite this morning with six nods as the Golden Globe nominees were announced. The awards which will air Sunday Jan. 15 on NBC are like the Oscars and Emmys held in the same room – at happy hour.

The notably acerbic Ricky Gervais will return as host for the third consecutive year. Here's a video of his opening monologue from last year:

In the TV arena, the best drama nominess were all cable series: HBO's Game of Thrones, FX's American Horror Story, HBO's Boardwalk Empire, Boss on Starz and Showtime's Homeland.

The networks fared better in comedy, particularly Fox which landed New Girl and Glee on the roster of nominees. They were joined by NBC's 30 Rock, ABC's Modern Family, HBO's Enlightened, and Showtime's Episodes.

The Globes, the work of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, held up their reputation of being a little more daring and progressive than their bigger and stodgier American cousins.

As an example consider the ladies in the Globe's best TV drama actress category: Claire Danes (Homeland), Mireille Enos (The Killing) Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Madeleine Stowe (Revenge), Callie Thorne (Necessary Roughness). How many of those do you think will get Emmy nods?

Joining The Artist in the best film drama category are The Help, The Descendants, The Ides of March, Money Ball, War Horse and Hugo.

Morgan Freeman will be honored with a lifetime achievement award on the night of the ceremony.
