NBC gives ‘The Mysteries of Laura’ a full season pickup

The comedy/mystery starring Debra Messing is the first NBC series to get an extension

The first new NBC show to get a full season order is…(envelope please)… The Mysteries of Laura. Hold your applause. Oh, you already were?

The strange comedy/detective show hybrid starring Debra Messing received a nine-episode extension on Tuesday. It's the 10th network rookie to get picked up for the duration, but the first for NBC, which hasn't had a lot to crow about this fall.

The Mysteries of Laura is based on a long-running Spanish series, Los Misterios de Laura – so you can see how much creativity went into adapting it. Messing plays the mom of super-destructive twins who also works fulltime and then some as a brilliant investigator for the N.Y.P.D. Call it Punishment & Crime.

The show, light but well-executed, hasn't been tearing up the ratings but it has been unusually consistent, not falling off dramatically each successive week, like so many of the new network series.

Over six weeks, The Mysteries of Laura has averaged 10.4 million viewers and a 1.8 rating in the 18-49 year old demographic. And that, apparently, is enough to keep you on the air on NBC. Bad Judge though? Don't buy any green bananas..
