Two thieves who stole a delivery driver's car, cash and cellphone in Upper Darby on Monday must have thought they were pretty smart when they turned off the GPS tracking on the victim's phone.
But when the suspects started using the phone to take photos of each other holding a shotgun, those photos were automatically uploaded to the victim's digital cloud and began showing up on the victim's other electronic devices, according to police.
Talk about having your head in the clouds.
Now, authorities are asking the public's help in identifying the would-be NRA models, one of whom has a very distinctive tattoo.
"It's their photos and their work and we hope it leads to their demise," said Upper Darby Police Superintendent Michael Chitwood.
According to Chitwood, around 12:30 a.m. Monday, a delivery driver for Quality Best Pizzas left his 1998 Honda sedan running while he made a drop at the Park Lane East Apartments on Beverly Boulevard near Sherbrook. Inside of the car was the driver's Motorola cell phone and $500 in cash. The driver returned to his car, but found there was no car to return to because it had been stolen.
Police found the vehicle ditched a short distance away but the cell phone and cash were gone, Chitwood said.
The following morning, the victim began getting pictures of two unknown teens on one of his other electronic devices. He realized that the photos were taken on his stolen phone and being automatically uploaded to his digital could, police said.
"Evidently, they're using his phone that was stolen to take pictures of themselves showing off a sawed-off shotgun," Chitwood said. "And the shotgun - it's nasty."
Both boys appear to be teenagers and one, who posed with his shirt off on a bed, has a tattoo of the Philly skyline with the LOVE sculpture in the foreground and 215 in the background.
"We're trying to get these guys identified so we can get them and this gun off the street," Chitwood said. "The world of technology will hopefully be used against them."
Anyone with information on the identity of the suspects is urged to call Upper Darby police at 610-734-7693.
