2 fatally shot within minutes in SW Philly

Two men were shot dead minutes, and blocks, apart tonight in Southwest Philadelphia, police said.

In the first incident, a 19-year-old man was shot once in the chest about 5:55 p.m. on Grays Avenue near 62nd Street, Chief Inspector Scott Small said.

He was pronounced dead at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania at 6:10 p.m., Small said. Police believe the victim to be a neighborhood resident.

About 8 minutes after that first slaying, another male, 24, was shot less than a mile away, on Buist Avenue near 61st Street, Small said.

In than incident, the victim was found with three gunshot wounds, one each in his face, chest and back. He was also taken to Penn, where he was pronounced dead at 6:36 p.m.

Despite their proximity, the slayings are being ruled as "separate, isolated incidents," Small said.
