Cops: Two killed, three critical in weekend incidents

A woman who was shot to death inside of a house in the city's Logan section today was the latest victim of violence this weekend in this city.

Aside from the woman, a man was killed in West Philadelphia on Saturday and three other men were critically wounded in separate incidents across the city on Saturday and Sunday.

With just two days left in 2014, Philadelphia's murder rate now stands at 249, down from 330 at the same time last year.

The city's 249th victim of the year lost her life inside of a house on Old York Road near Courtland Street around 9:06 a.m. today, police said. The 49-year-old woman was shot once in the head and pronounced on scene by medics. An arrest was made in the case but police have not released the names of the victim or the accused nor have they provided a motive for the slaying.

At 12:44 a.m. today, police responded to Spruce Street near 60th where they found a 42-year-old man on the road who had been shot once in the back. That man, whose identity has not been released, was transported to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was pronounced dead at 1:09 a.m., according to police.

Although a weapon was not used in the assault on a 22-year-old man at Orthodox and Tacony streets in Frankford around 12:27 a.m. today, the head injuries he suffered were severe enough to land him in critical condition at Hahnemann University Hospital, according to police. Police have not released the victim's name, the number of assailants or a motive for the assault.

A 48-year-old man who was shot in the stomach, pelvis and leg on Vine Street near 61st in West Philadelphia around 1:37 a.m. today continues to fight for his life in critical condition at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania, according to police.

The weekend's violence started around 8:30 p.m. Saturday, when a 24-year-old man was shot in the leg and stomach on Cumberland Street near 24th in North Philadelphia. He was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he remains in critical condition.
