Police probing 'suspicious death' in East Mount Airy

Investigators tonight are trying to piece together the final moments of a 43-year-old man found dead inside his home in East Mount Airy.

Officers were called to the man's house, on Ardleigh Street near Mt. Pleasant Avenue, about 6 p.m., according to Chief Inspector Scott Small. Initial information said the man had been shot and that a weapon was still inside the home.

When police arrived, they found the man sitting on his couch in his living room. He had been shot once in his head, Small said.

Medics pronounced the man, who hasn't been identified by police, dead at the scene. Despite the early indication that a firearm was inside the home, investigators could not find it, Small said.

A police source told the Daily News that the weapon may have been removed from the scene by the victim's family members.

Additionally, the home had no signs of forced entry and was not "ransacked," Small said. Because of that evidence, police have not ruled the man's death a homicide, pending further tests by the Medical Examiner's Office.
