Source: Mayfair couple hurt in attempted murder-suicide
A Mayfair man is clinging to life after he allegedly shot his live-in girlfriend and then turned the gun on himself.
Officers were called to the pair's house, on Mershon Street near Devereaux Avenue, just after 7 a.m., police said. A 9-year-old girl, the female victim's daughter from a previous relationship, had dialed 9-1-1.
The girl had heard the adults arguing, followed by a loud bang, she later told detectives. When she went to investigate, she found her mother laying on the floor, screaming for her to get help, according to a police source.
Arriving officers found the man, 26, and woman, 28, shot inside the home and took them to Aria Health's Torresdale hospital. Police declined to release their names.
The man, who had been shot in the head, remains there in "extremely critical condition," the source said. It's unclear if he'll survive the wound, which was apparently self-inflicted.
His girlfriend was shot in her upper shoulder. She remains at the hospital in stable condition, police said.
Investigators have characterized the ordeal as an attempted murder-suicide, but it was unclear what prompted the violence. The two recently moved to Mayfair with their 1 1/2-year-old daughter, who also was home at the time of the shooting, and the woman's older child, sources said.
Two weapons were recovered from the house, a revolver and a semi-automatic handgun. It's unclear which was used in the shooting.
Sources said the couple didn't have any prior reports of domestic violence on file with police.
