Two men were shot and killed by police in separate shootings Wednesday night.

The first incident was on Wyalusing Avenue near 65th Street in West Philadelphia. Police responded to the area for a report of two males with guns shortly before 6:30 p.m. According to Chief Inspector Scott Small, arriving officers spotted the suspects, who then fled on foot. As officers gave chase, one suspect was struck by a car, but recovered and allegedly pointed a gun at the officers. The officers fired and struck the suspect once in the chest, Small said.

Police recovered a fully-loaded Glock .9mm near the suspect, Small said.

The suspect was taken to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania where he was pronounced dead at 6:40 p.m. Police did not release his name.

The second suspect was caught a few blocks away and taken into custody, Small said. Police are still searching for the second weapon.

At about 8:45 p.m., police were called to Devon Street near Mt. Pleasant Avenue in East Mount Airy for a report of a man with a gun. When officers arrived, the suspect fled on foot. Police eventually caught up to the suspect, at which time he pointed a gun at two officers, Small said. The officers fired, striking the suspect once in the chest.

The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene at 9:01 p.m. Police recovered a semi-automatic handgun near the suspect.

No police were injured in either incident.
