According to Deadline Hollywood, Paramount pictures is "finalizing a deal" for Martin Scorsese to direct Furious Love, the torrid chronicle of Elizabeth Taylor's and Richard Burton's affair and two marriages, based on the page-turning book by Sam Cashman and Nancy Schoenberger.
Two questions: Is Scorsese the right filmmaker for this material? And who can do justice to Taylor and Burton, possessors of the most singular faces and voices of Hollywood's golden age?
Scorsese has directed two great biopics, Raging Bull and The Aviator and certainly knows the Taylor and Burton filmographies better than anyone. But I'm just not feeling it. When I read Furious Love, I thought that the living filmmaker who could capture the muchness of the Olympian lives of Burton and Taylor was Bill Condon (Kinsey, Dreamgirls). Condon writes his own screenplays.
Which actors can play Taylor and Burton at their ripest and their most dessicated? The young English actress Gemma Arterton has Taylor's voluptuous beauty and mercurial temperament. Anthony Hopkins, a Welshman like Burton, has the voice but might be a little long in the tooth. Daniel Craig could nail it though.
