Emery decision lingers
For now, there is no news out of the Flyers with regards to goaltender Ray Emery's injury. But that's just temporary.
NEWARK, N.J. - For now, no news is some news for Flyers fans.
Flyers general manager Paul Holmgren released a statement just a few minutes ago regarding goaltender Ray Emery:
"The MRI study and X-Rays on Ray's hip are still being looked at. We hope to have more information in a day or two."
No more, no less.
Holmgren, attending the funeral of Maple Leafs' general manager Brian Burke's son, Brendan, in Canton, Mass., probably wasn't in a position to say much more.
As reported in Tuesday's Daily News, Emery could require surgery on a possible torn labrum in his hip.
The MRI was done on Monday. More than 24 hours later, the Flyers don't have any answers.
That means one of three things: the results were inconclusive, the results were unfortunate for the Flyers, or Emery is fine and will stun us all when he plays Wednesday night here in New Jersey.
I'm going to bet on the second option, while the Flyers are almost definitely looking for a second opinion.
Why would I say that?
As Holmgren said on Monday - and reported in the above article - Emery was slated to skate Tuesday and "push it hard." Emery didn't skate at all on Tuesday at the Flyers Skate Zone in Voorhees. He declined to address the media about his injury.
Brian Boucher was the only goaltender taking shots from Riley Cote, Ville Leino and the assistant coaches.
The best bet is that Michael Leighton will be starting in net tomorrow against the Devils, his fourth straight start. Overall, Leighton is 9-3-1 as the Flyers' starter this year. The Flyers beat the Devils, 3-2, on Monday night in the first game of this home-and-home series.
WEATHER UPDATE: The Flyers and Devils game will almost certainly be played as originally scheduled on Wednesday night, despite forecasts calling for 14-20 inches of snow in downtown Newark, N.J. The Flyers are currently en route (as of 7:00 p.m. on Tuesday) to North Jersey and NHL rules dictate that the game should be played as scheduled when both teams are in a given city, outside of extraordinary circumstances. Whether the referees will arrive on time could throw a wrench into the schedule: Washington, D.C., Philadelphia and Newark/JFK/LaGuardia all have massive flight cancellations in anticipation of the storm. In fact, Newark Int'l Airport is already closed for tomorrow. Rest assured, though, you will get your Flyers fix in Thursday's Daily News as we're already on-site.
