Baby Jesus theft not caught on tape

Reviews of videotapes of Independence Mall have shed no light on the apparent theft of a baby Jesus.

A Nativity was set up early Saturday morning near Fifth and Markets, and by Monday morning, the infant and its cradle had vanished.

Rangers for Independence National Historical Park checked camera footage but found no images showing the removal of the religious icon. No witnesses have come forward, either.

"It's still an open investigation, however," said park spokeswoman Jane Cowley this morning.

A replacement figurine will probably be added either Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, according to the Christmas Creche Committee, which set up the display.
