Briefing on SW Philly fatal fire now on for today

This afternoon the city’s Fire Department and Fire Marshal’s Office will officially announce the cause of Friday’s blaze in Southwest Philadelphia that killed seven people.

Earlier, a fire official said the report would not be released today, said Capt. Richard Davison.

Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers is currently meeting with investigators to finalize their findings, Davison said.

The blaze was apparently was set off by a mishandled kerosene heater in the three-story brick twin in the 6400 block of Elmwood Avenue.

A basement stairway had been removed during recent renovations, leaving only one exit for the victims.

Four adults and three children were killed in the late-night fire.
