Cheesesteak revenues go to cop's family

Geno's owner Joey Vento says it's "a shame" that Philadelphia has seen so many police funerals. Because of this, he said, he will give his entire till for 19 hours to the family of Sgt. Timothy Simpson, who was killed by an alleged drunken driver last month.

Joey Vento, owner of Geno's Steaks at Ninth Street and Passyunk Avenue in South Philadelphia, told Inquirer columnist Michael Klein earlier this week that it's "a shame" that the city has seen so many police funerals.

Because of this, he said, he will give his entire till for 19 hours - every dime that comes in from 10 a.m. Thursday to 5 a.m. Friday - to the family of Sgt. Timothy Simpson, who was killed by an alleged drunken driver last month.

The estimated take is just north of $50,000, Vento says. He's done it twice before, as a token of appreciation for the families of Officer Isabel Nazario and Sgt. Patrick McDonald and for Sgt. Stephen Liczbinski.

"It's not going to bring them back, but it'll show the family there are people out there backing them," says Vento.
