Recap: 'Supergirl' ep. 205, 'Crossfire'
What may have been missed in the form of a water-cooler-discussion-level threat however was made up for with lots of little moments. Mon-El gets his new identity (Mike), new look (a boy-Kara with sweater vest, bowtie and glasses) and Social Security number before being whisked away to start the day as a CatCo intern. Apparently Daxamites are the pimps of the universe because no sooner than he's introduced to James Olsen's assistant Miss Tessmacher then she's all a glow. Meanwhile, Alex Danvers' obvious crush on Science Police Detective Maggie Sawyer runs head-on into an opening when she reveals that last week's convenient girlfriend has broken up with her. Our hi-tech bank robbers turn out to be pawns of Cadmus, using alien weaponry to make aliens look bad in the eyes of humanity. Not long after using an anti-gravity gun to launch a police car into space, our robber stooges come face to face with…Ski Mask Guy aka James Olsen, trying to find his place as a hero. An 'E' for effort but he does manage to save the residents of a building that falls victim to space weapon number three. His next move is to try again to convince Wynn to help him in the hero game again. No luck there, though.
It all comes to a head at the Luthor Company gala, where our criminals du jour have chosen to strike against the wishes of their Cadmus benefactors. Lena Luthor calls in a favor for Supergirl to protect the party while also inviting Kara. This leads us into Wynn and Kara's Operation Doubtfire, where she and Supergirl, at super-speed, swap in and out of Lena's presence. Any surprise that our villains are undone by the combined brains and brawn of Lena, Wynn and Supergirl? No, the surprises come per usual at the end of the episode when the Cadmus leader delivers a long-distance lobotomy to the brains of the captured villains and stands revealed as matriarch of the Luthor clan. Wynn gives in to James' earnestness and the two of them begin the Olsen hero journey.
While not the most explosive episode, the personal insights were enlightening and fun. Mon-El coming from under Kara's shadow to discover himself, James' quest to escape from his sidekick role and Alex's coming out to her girl crush partner Maggie Sawyer are going to lead us down a number of different roads. Interesting times await us all as the sophomore season of Supergirl goes on.
