Do you know where your food comes from?
A big part of greener living is of course the food we eat -- what we eat and how it is produced. However, when you shop at your local supermarket, it is not always easy to trace your food directly back to the source.
Too often in our modern, fast-paced society, we don't take the time to ask the important questions like where does our food come from and is it produced in ethical, sustainable ways? A big part of greener living is of course the food we eat -- what we eat and how it is produced. However, when you shop at your local supermarket, it is not always easy to trace your food directly back to the source. That is why Community Supported Agriculture like Philly Food Works is so important.
By signing up for membership to a CSA like Philly Food Works, you will be able to get your weekly produce, eggs, beef and pork from local farms that meet PFW's rigorous standards of environmental sustainability and ethical labor and workplace practices. This Saturday, October 17, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Philly Food Works, along with Honey Brook Harvest Collective, invites you to come see for yourself one of the farms they work with at their free, annual Farm Fest.
Reuben Riehl's Farm in Honeybrook, PA, is a working Amish farm that provides many of the veggies in the CSA as well as eggs, beef and pork. During the harvest party, you can experience a little bit of farm life. Pet the horses, feed the animals and explore the produce patch. Don't miss out on all the crafts, workshops, games and food, including samples from different Philly Food Works producers. Vegetarian-friendly dishes will also be on the menu.
"It is a great way to gather members and the community at large so they can see where their food is coming from and see firsthand what they are investing in," explained Rebecca Ebner, product manager at Philly Food Works.
Here are some of the activities:
Morning yoga class with Cristina, founder of Sculpere Studios, Bring your own mat/blanket.
Yogurt making workshop with Esther Riehl - Learn how to milk a cow and use the fresh milk to make homemade yogurt!
Learn to Milk a Cow Workshop - Reuben will show you the ropes on how to milk a cow.
Apple Pressing - Press apples and enjoy fresh and warm apple cider.
Wagon Rides - Tour the 47 acres of fields and woods. Maybe there will be some hidden pumpkins.
