It's Bike to Work Day
Got your bike oiled up, tires pumped? Helmet at the ready?
Tomorrow is Bike to Work Day, which is one of the premium events of Bike to Work Week, which is one of the premium events of National Bike Month.
Is there an echo in here?
Well, it's spring and gorgeous weather, so why not all things bike?
Mayor Nutter, two classes of school children, a few more dignitaries and regular old bicyclists will meet at Lloyd Hall at 7:30 and cycle to Love Park.
In the burbs, one of the events will by a ride led by two Montgomery County commissioners, Josh Shapiro and Leslie Richards, from the Spring Mill train station in Conshohocken to the Norristown Transportation Center, where they have all kinds of events cooked up, including tables about clean air — one of the many benefits of more cycling and less driving.
Back in Philly, Carl Dranoff, president of Dranoff Properties, is using the event as a prime moment to tout the complimentary bike-sharing program for residents of his rental properties.
"For anyone who has spent time exploring the fabric of a ity, they'll tell you to walk or ride a bike," he said.
If you've missed the May 1 beginning of the National Bike Challenge - in which individuals and groups tout up their mileage through Sept. 30 — you can still sign on. There's a lot of time left.
The last I checked, Pennsylvania was in 7th place, and New Jersey in 37th.
Groups from Thorndale, King of Prussia and Barnegat Light were riding hard and doing well.
