I'm a big time Sports blogger. I was wondering if you could check out my blog and add it to this site. ----- COMMENT: AUTHOR: daniel rubin
zach, know any food blogs?
Dan, a friend of mine chronicles her attempt to make every recipe in the Joy of Cooking cookbook. The URL is http://www.joyfulcooking.blogspot.com/
Messy and Picky ( http://www.urgeforgoing.com/reviews.html ) isn't a blog, per se, but it is run by a local blogger ( http://dragonballyee.blogs.com/philly/ ) and his Lady ( http://urgeforgoing.com/ ). In his interview with Joe Hoeffel, Albert asked him whether he preferred Pat's or Geno's, which led to a little discussion about the best cheesesteaks in Philly. I think it would be fun to convene a whole bunch of bloggers to go around the city on a weekly or monthly basis, sampling cheesesteaks and blogging about the experience. The only problem with that plan is that our arteries might not last long under a sustained cheesesteak assault. But that's the kind of risk I, for one, am willing to take.
Chubby's, on Henry Ave. in Wissahickon, is by far the best. (not to start a fight or anything, hehheh)
What about roast pork sandwiches with sharp provolone? A little rabe, maybe. Some roasted hot peppers. A keg of Maalox.
Citizen Mom- "not to start a fight or anything" - heh. In my year+ here in Philly, I know that I could start a streetbrawl on any corner by stating that my favorite 'steak is ______ with no problem.
(chewing on the bait like it's a tony luke's sandwich) I don't know, Citizen Mom. I live about two blocks from Chubby's. Just had a cheesesteak there two nights ago. It's good stuff. But do you really think it holds a candle to Geno's or Pat's? I don't think it's even close.
Dan, that roast pork sandwich you're looking for is at DiNic's in the Reading Terminal Market. Provolone doesn't come any sharper than what they use.
Matt, I'm a Philly homegirl, so I can say this: Pat's and Geno's are for tourists. Seriously. (though I ain't mad at Geno's -- it'll certainly do the job after a night out drinkin') But really: Chubby's cheesesteak hoagie. Bli-iiiss. When I was growing up, D'Allesandros (across Henry Ave. from Chubby's) used to get all the hype, but they suck too.
Citizen Mom, the very steak I had the other day at Chubby's *was* a cheesesteak hoagie. I'm with you -- it is a thing of beauty. But it still doesn't compare to Geno's or Pat's. G&P are those rare things -- tourist attractions that are not tourist *traps.* There is a big difference. At Chubby's, the meat is sometimes gristly, and not always as hot as I'd like. I like the fact that Geno's (my preference over Pat's) doesn't dice up the meat -- it seems less greasy to me (maybe because less surface area of the meat is exposed to grease?). And the rolls at Geno's beat Chubby's by a mile. Mind you, I do like Chubby's--I go there all the time (their italian hoagies are also very good). I like their steaks, I like their hours, I like the fact that they sell beer. But I'd take a Geno's steak over a Chubby's steak any day of the week. One of the best cheesesteaks I've had wasn't in Philly, but Atlantic City, at The White House -- another tourist attraction that lives up to the hype.
A buddy of mine from college's friend has a nice boston based blog dedicated to his love of Burritos. Being from Boston you should appreciate it. I could go for a Super Chicken from Annas. http://www.burritoblog.com/
I just moved to the Philly area from Miami and can't wait to check out all the cheesesteak joints in town, so this info helps me greatly. Maybe you can help me on this question, too: Are there any Carvel ice cream shops around here? I'm craving a Fudgie the Whale cake like you wouldn't believe!
http://carvel.know-where.com/carvel/cgi/selection?option=&mapid=USs&lang=en&design=default&addr=&city=®ion=&zip=19101&phone= copy all that in a browser, and it will send you to northeast philly, or several suburban spots where you can get your whale on. dan
Can I just say that I am SO excited that I'm gonna get my Carvel fix here in Philly! When I go home to Florida it's the first place I go....It's good to know I don't have to wait until I go home! Bring on the Chocolate! Ingrid
