Guitarists Wanted. No Exp. Nec.
R. J. Eskow, an ex-CBGBs lurker, riffs on this idea at the Huffington Post, noting "Mainstream journalists certainly look at them the same way lounge singers once looked at bloodstained guitar-smashers in bondage gear. That's a good start. And it's definitely a DIY world, with its own loopy Darwinist principles but no rules for entry. It's not about credentials."
In fairness, he notes that not all blogs have that punk ethos. For every Johnny Rotten there's an Emerson Lake and Palmer.
Want to buy my copy of Brain Salad Surgery? Cheap!
no, I'm ok with Brain Salad but am looking for Trilogy on vinyl (it went missing from ny collection around 1985)
Because of the band's slim pickings on market, guitarist Steve Jones of the Sex Pistols works as a curmudgeony DJ on an LA alt-rock radio station, to the delight of his fawning -- and big -- crowd of admirers. Now 50 years old, he looks like one of the bad guys on "The Avengers." The Pistols have done two reunion tours, which have been critically acclaimed for the quality of the musicianship, probably because Jones can now play as well as he ever has, and they employ the original bassist, Glen Matlock, who actually could always play the instrument -- a skill Sid Vicious never acquired prior to his untimely demise. If bloggers occupy a parallel universe 30 years after the Pistols' salad days, they'd be advised to make a decision about whether or not they are anarchists or capitalists, or risk being compared to the stunningly insignificant Emerson, Lake and Palmer.
Punk rock is not about sitting quietly and silently at a screen, tapping.
