Eagles Blog Wrap
When did Ben Franklin climb on top of City Hall? That was national TV, Mike Tirico. And we wonder why Johnny can't nail his SAT IIs in American History.
Enrico saw what I saw: A fan in the stands with a sign that read: "Get well soon T.O. so we can HURT you!" Guess we'll hear some more about Terrell Owens this week.
What was up with the fake field goal to end the first half? Negadelphia broke it down this way:
The entire scenario was nonsensical -I can't even list everything wrong with that but...
* why fake a field goal when you're only down by 2 points? A FG would have put us in the lead into halftime.
* and what message does it send to a talented kicker like Akers to not let him attempt a 54 yarder? why not either let him kick it or if you'd rather not let him try, just let McNabb take one more shot at the endzone?
* and if you are going to fake it, why run the clock to 1 second before doing so? That left no time for a follow up play if you DO get the first down. We had 3 timeouts with 45 seconds left on their 30 yard line - Result: no points.
* and then, let's say you go for the fake - why give the ball to your slowest offensive player, Schobel? Were they expecting him to go the distance to paydirt?
* again, back to the basic question - why even fake a field goal with a guy like Akers who could actually make it?!
AOL's Fanzone called the fake "a mistake. And you know, that's probably the one play the Eagles had to fake a field goal for a short gain, and they just gave it away. They're going to have to install a whole new play for that situation."
PhillyPurge says the defense sparkled, even if it never sacked Packers QB Brett Favre. And Donovan? With 288 passing yards, two TDs by air and two more by land, McNabb continued "his torrid season:"
He is playing the best football of his career, tossing 9 TD's to just 1 INT, with nearly 1300 yards passing and a 61% completion rate. The haters and critics will say "Look at his competition." My answer to them is you play who you play. Nobody criticized Peyton Manning during the regular season when he played the likes of the Texans, Titans, and Jaguars (when they were a losing team).
ESPN puts the Eagles 4th in its Power Rankings. Len Pasquarelli writes of the Eagles' former penchant for fourth-quarter fades:
In a contest that went from taut to torturous in a third-quarter flurry of big offensive plays, with most of them authored by quarterback Donovan McNabb, the Eagles were absolutely scorching at the end.
And the Eagles hope the momentum created in the second half, when they outscored Green Bay 24-0 and simply outplayed an overmatched Packers team in every facet, will carry over to next Sunday, when Owens and the Cowboys visit this raucous, mad-house crucible that anxiously awaits their arrival.
The Mighty MJD Sports Blog wondered why every TV analyst -- Steve Young, for instance -- was making excuses for Brett Favre. Until it heard Michael Irvin:
Finally, from the opposing team's newspaper:
The good news is the way the NFL has set up the Green Bay Packers' future schedules, it is guaranteed that they won't have to come here and face the Philadelphia Eagles again until 2010 at the earliest.
Well, unless they meet in the playoffs.
(You can stop laughing now.)
I'm not an Irvin fan but he at least was the only honest one there about Favre. Before he made the comment, my son, who is a part-time fan, asked why was it that when Favre really overthrew the receivers downfield, even wide of the sideline once, the announcers blamed it on the receiver not getting further downfield (like they were Speedy Gonzalez or something who could go into hyperdrive) but never said Favre overthrew them? There is no question that he has been a great QB for years and fun to watch, I remember a Green bay game against the Iggles where he hurt his shoulder and still beat us with one dangling arm, but let's not cheapen his career by making lame excuses for him.
How about the Dallas sucks and TO swallows Tshirt that made it on National TV? That's just the beginning...
