Remembering a sweet spot
As Krispy Kreme arrives, memories of another legendary South Jersey donut
As the Krispy Kreme chain opens its long-awaited Collingswood store, donuts are much on our minds.
Via email, longtime pal John Crosbie reminisces about the storied McClintock's Bakery, formerly of Kings Highway in Haddonfield.
The shop's cream-filled donuts "were legendary," Crosbie recalls. "I have never had a cream-filled donut that even comes close to these incredible treats.
"In the late 70's, a friend and I had spent the night up in NYC at a jazz concert, sleeping in his car at the Port Authority and driving home the next morning. We wheeled into Haddonfield with a craving for the famous cream-filled donuts.
"We were a sorry looking pair, standing in line, when we noticed a couple of customers ahead of us, was Joe Namath."
The NFL great was saying that a South Jersey friend "had sent him the cream-filled donuts," Crosbie writes. "He was determined to get more."
