Four-Run Third For Catholic League

Carpenter Cup Quarterfinal

Philadelphia Catholic League vs. Mercer County at University of Pennsylvania's Meiklejohn Stadium.

Score is 6-0 Catholic League in the bottom of the third inning. Things are getting a little chippy. Coaches from both teams were warned to stop jawing at each other.

Four-run third inning for the Catholic League

Archbishop Wood sophomore Kyle McCrossen hit an RBI double, driving in the Catholic League's sixth run.

Neumann-Goretti senior catcher Joey Armata crushed two-run double to left-centerfield for the Catholic League, increasing the lead to 5-0.

Archbishop Wood centerfielder Brian O'Grady, who singled to start the top of the third inning, scored the Catholic League's third run on a balk.

St. Joe Prep righthander Kevin Gillen of the Catholic League got out of a bases loaded jam with one out in the second. Gillen got a pop out and a flyout to centerfield to end the inning.

Gillen didn't look as sharp as he did in the opening round, but he's got the job done with two scorless innings before being relieved in the third by North Catholic junior RHP Ryan Etsell.

The Philadelphia Catholic League jumped to a 2-0 lead on a towering two-run home run to rightfield by junior first baseman Mark Donato of Neumann-Goretti.

What a shot! Carpenter Cup officials estimate it went 405 feet.
