Ex-Comcast exec Markell wins Del. gov nod
Ex-Nextel and Comcast executive turned Delaware state treasurer Jack Markell, flush with cash from Philly donors, edged party-backed former Biden aide Lt Gov John Carney in the governor's primary for the state's dominant Democrats. Coons coasts in New Castle Co. race.
Ex-Nextel and Comcast executive-turned-Delaware state treasurer Jack Markell, who raised over $2 million by fundraising among business-oriented Democrats in Philly and beyond, edged party-backed Lt. Gov. John Carney (a onetime aide to VP-candidate Sen. Joe Biden) in the Democratic primary. Markell outspent Carney roughly 2 to 1, and his TV ads beat the Democratic organization's union-backed door-to-door campaign.
Markell will face GOP hopeful ex-Judge William Swain Lee, best known for having sentenced to death former Saul Ewing law firm partner Thomas Capano, for killing an ex-girlfriend. Democratic primary voters outnumbered Republicans by nearly 3-to-1, leaving Markell the favorite in November.
Business-backed New Castle County executive Christopher Coons coasted in his primary re-election bid, quashing predecessor and ex-county cops chief Tom Gordon nearly 2-1. No GOP nominee, so Coons gets four more years running Delaware's dominant county. There are no towns in most of Delaware, so counties there have extra powers, especially over development.
