Solomon Burke Funeral Arrangements

Funeral arrangements in California have been announced for the great Philadelphia-born soul singer Solomon Burke, who died a week ago on an Amsterdam bound airplane at age 70. There will be a public wake held on Thursday night from 5 to 9 p.m. at Pierce Brothers Valley Oaks Griffin Mortuary in Westlake Village, Ca., followed by a private funeral service at the City of Refuge in Gardena, Ca. at 10 a.m. on Friday. Locally, Friday's funeral service will be simulcast at Sharon Baptist Church on 3955 Conshohocken Ave. in the Wynnefield Heights section of Philadelphia. The service will also be streamed live on the web at www.thekingsolomonburke.com. Below, "Cry To Me," the definitive version of a song that was later covered by the Rolling Stones, Tom Petty and Duffy, among many others.
