A Lansdale, Montgomery County, man has been arrested and charged with drug offenses after nine bags of cocaine were allegedly found in the SUV he was driving, police said.
Police officials identified the suspect as Wendell B. Savage Jr., 27, of the 300 block of W. Main Street.
Savage was apprehended in Lansdale Aug. 14 after police acting on a search warrant found 7.5 grams of cocaine in the SUV’s glove compartment.
Police had reason to believe drugs were in the vehicle, a blue Lincoln Navigator, because they previously had received a tip that Savage was dealing drugs from the car, said Lansdale police Sgt. Alex Kromdyk.
After a traffic stop, Aug. 7, officers summoned a K-9 to check for controlled substances, Kromdyk said. Savage would not give up the keys to the SUV, so officers towed it.
“The K-9 alerted to the drugs from a simple walk around the vehicle,” Kromdyk said.
The recovered narcotics are worth an estimated $600 to $800 when sold on suburban streets, but likely more in Philadelphia, Kromdyk said.
Savage was taken into custody Tuesday when he appeared at Lansdale District Court for an unrelated summary hearing.
He is charged with drug possession, possession with intent to distribute drugs, and having drug paraphernalia, Kromdyk said.
