Recount in tied Abington races spills over until Tuesday

The two tied races are currently undergoing an official recount, which will extend into Tuesday. If the ties remain, the winner will be decided by "drawing lots."

The two Abington Township commissioner races that ended in a tie in Tuesday's election will not be decided this week.

A recount began today, as required under the county election code, but county spokesman Frank Custer said it will not be completed by the end of the day. That means it'll have to wait through the weekend and Monday's Veterans Day holiday, and resume on Tuesday.

If the official results still find a tie, the winner in each ward will be determined by "drawing lots." Custer said the county solicitor's office is determining what form that will take -- coin flip, drawing straws, rolling dice, etc.

In Ward 3 (the Jenkintown section of Abington), Democrat Michael O'Connor and Republican Lawrence F. Jones both received 510 votes. And in Ward 4 (the Elkins Park section of Abington), Democrat Jimmy DiPlacido and Republican Pamela Vasserman each got 517 votes.
