2017 Broad Street Run lottery opens Wednesday
And they're off. The 2017 Independence Blue Cross Broad Street Run lottery opens Wednesday and closes Feb. 13, at 11:59 p.m.
Runners may register for the lottery at any time during the 13-day period. Selections for the race are at random and runners gain no advantage by signing up on the first day.
Runners who receive one of the 40,000 bibs will be notified through email and a charge to their credit cards on Feb. 16.
Three groups qualify for guaranteed entry this year. Runners are guaranteed if:
They deferred their 2016 entry to 2017.
They were rejected in the 2015 and 2016 lotteries.
They have run 10 or more races, either consecutively or non-consecutively.
Tenured runners must still sign up for the lottery. If they are not selected, they can email veterans@broadstreetrun.com to secure a bib.
Those who still don't get in have options.
Runners can also gain entry by fund-raising for one of four charity partners: American Cancer Society, Fairmount Park Conservancy, Students Run Philly Style, or Back on My Feet.
The Philadelphia Parks and Recreation Department, which puts on the event, began a lottery format in 2013 after the race sold out in just five hours.
The 38th annual run will take place on May 7, beginning at 8 a.m. The 10-mile race starts at Broad Street and Fisher Avenue, and finishes about a quarter-mile inside the main gate of the Navy Yard.
