WIP's Angelo Cataldi ponders retirement again

Just when you thought it was a quiet day in Philadelphia sports, one of the city's all-time experts in civic noisemaking has upended everything.

In an interview with PhillyMag's Victor Fiorillo, titanic WIP sports talk radio host Angelo Cataldi said he's planning to retire next year.

Cataldi said his contract runs out at the end of 2017, and that he thinks "that will be the end of the run and I will walk away really happy."

Elsewhere in the piece, Cataldi reflected on what is by far his biggest claim to fame: Wing Bowl.

It's worth noting that Cataldi has threatened to retire a few times in the past. When he signed his current contract in 2014, he told Molly Eichel that "someone else should get a chance after this one." And as Mike Klein noted in 2010 when Cataldi signed his previous contract, Cataldi wrote on his personal blog that he was "convinced this will be my last contract at WIP, and in radio."

Does Cataldi mean it now? We'll have to wait until next year to find out.

The real news, though, is the admission the idea that WIP's own people have "grave misgivings" about what Wing Bowl has become. After all, Cataldi and his morning show colleagues have built the thing into a beast that's almost as prominent on the local sports scene as Cataldi's beloved Eagles.

If Cataldi goes, could Wing Bowl go with him? It seems impossible to imagine, but given the tone of this interview, it's hard to avoid wondering about.
