The Ultimate Fighter 19, episode 6 recap: Controversy mars fight; Dana White is mad at everyone
Episode 6 of The Ultimate Fighter boasted one of the oddest finishes to a fight in the history of the show.
The bulk of the episode was dedicated to the fight between Roger Zapata of Team Penn and Ian Stephens of Team Edgar, so let's get right to it.
During the first round, Stephens showcased his wrestling prowess by getting Zapata on the ground and maintaining control. Zapata managed to land a couple of strikes, including some elbows to Stephens' head, but Stephens controlled the bulk of the round. Referee Steve Mazzagatti warned Zapata about the angle with which he was delivering the elbows.
The second round essentially belonged to Zapata, as he stayed busier than Stephens. While Stephens scored a takedown, he didn't do much once he got there. Meanwhile, Zapata landed numerous strikes to Stephens, which eventually cut open Stephens on the top of his head and earned him the round.
With the fight even after two rounds, the fight was to be decided in a decisive third and final round. This is where things get murky.
Stephens managed to get Zapata on the ground, but was fatigued and spent most of the round lying on top of Zapata again. Zapata then began to mount some more strikes, including the elbows, but Mazzagatti docked Zapata a point for throwing downward elbows, which infuriated Team Penn as well as UFC President Dana White.
White thought that Mazzagatti should have given Zapata a definitive final warning before docking him a point. To Mazzagatti's credit, he did give Zapata numerous warnings before docking the point. However, he did not give a definitive final warning. Assuming the fight was over, White stormed off into his dressing room.
Eventually, the final horn sounded and the fight went to the judges' scorecards. Despite being docked a point in the decisive third round, Zapata won the fight by decision.
This confused White and the teams even more as Zapata shouldn't have been able to win the third round because he was docked the point. Somehow, two judges scored the round a draw, but one scored it in favor of Stephens. Instead of the fight going to Stephens, the judges were told to circle whom they believed won the fight. All three judges circled Zapata, giving him the victory.
After all of the mass confusion, the decision was final: Zapata earned another victory for Team Penn, who got to choose the next fight.
The team's choice was Philadelphia's Anton Berzin to go up against Team Edgar's Pat Walsh in a fight that White thinks Berzin should be the heavy favorite. White even said that Berzin is arguably the toughest fighter on the show.
