Baseball: St. Augustine shuts out Sacred Heart

Kevin Baxter ran his scoreless innings streak to 30 as St. Augustine beat Sacred Heart 13-0 on Saturday in the first round of the Joe Hartmann Diamond Classic.

Baxter, a 6-4 senior right-hander, allowed four hits and walked one. He struck out eight.

Baxter also delivered a three-run double that gave the Hermits a 5-0 lead with two outs in the fifth innings.

Baxter (6-1) has thrown four consecutive complete-game shutouts. He last allowed a run in the fourth inning of an 11-1 win over Bishop Eustace on April 21.

St. Augustine (12-6) has won six of seven. The Hermits will face Washington Township, which beat Eastern 7-3, in the quarterfinals next Saturday.

SA had eight runs on eight hits in the sixth inning. Centerfielder Mike Scimeca had two doubles and scored two runs in the inning.

Junior outfielder Theo Mercurio had two hits for Sacred Heart (12-6), which has lost three in a row and five of seven.
