Baseball: Bishop Eustace beats Paul VI

Junior Zac Gallen pitched a complete game as Bishop Eustace beat Paul VI, 4-1, on Tuesday to claim a share of the Olympic National title.

Gallen, a right-hander, allowed six hits with zero walks as BE improved to 14-5 overall and 6-1 in the divison. The Crusaders can clinch the Olympic National title outright with a victory over Camden Catholic on Friday.

BE had just two hits, both by freshman shortstop Chris Jones. But PVI made three key errors that led to three unearned runs.

BE played strong defense behind Gallen, especially middle infielders Jones and senior second baseman T.J. Maiorino.

Jones and Maiorino combined to turn a big double play to end a Paul VI rally in the sixth inning.

BE has won six in a row and eight of nine. The Crusaders face Holy Cross in the Diamond Classic quarterfinals on Saturday.

Losing pitcher Ned Kerr allowed just two hits and struck out 10 for PVI (13-7, 5-2).
