Now that we're in the midst of spring, homeowners are sprucing up the outside of their homes to prepare for the nice weather to come.

Now that we're in the midst of spring, homeowners are sprucing up the outside of their homes to prepare for the nice weather to come.

With Memorial Day Weekend less than a month away, landscaping and gardening companies are booming in business.

"Spring time is always the busiest time of year," said Steve Zimmer of Oakshade Nursery, a gardening and landscaping company in Burlington County. "People are trying to clean up everything and get their yards ready for spring and summer when people are usually entertaining and using their properties a lot more."

According to Houzz's Spring Landscaping Study, more than half of homeowners are making updates to improve their yards for entertaining. The survey found the most popular features homeowners are adding are patios and decks, BBQs, and fire pits.

Zimmer, whose clients range across South Jersey, says he has noticed customers asking for those features the most. He says patios range from $16 to $30 per square foot, depending on the material used.

"People have been investing a lot more into their homes and are creating basically another room on the outside for more living space," he said.

But Zimmer, along with other professionals, say there are some simple, less costly things that any homeowner can do to spruce up their backyard and make their curb appeal more attractive.
