Zillow survey reveals DIY regrets and successes

If you didn't know, the real estate behemoth Zillow has recently spun off a design blog, Zillow Digs. According to their recent survey, 75 percent of homeowners have undertaken a do-it-yourself project in the last three years. Now that the dust has settled on the projects, though, nearly 40 percent regret their DIY decisions.

Among the biggest regrets? Attempting to expand a bedroom or bathroom. Of the owners who've attempted to expand rooms, 42 percent report going over budget themselves, while 32 percent report going over budget with professional help.

Rounding out the list of regrets are replacing or refinishing cabinetry, refinishing a basement or an attic, replacing or reinstalling carpet and refinishing or reinstalling flooring.

Homeowners who undertake minor projects report significantly more satisfaction with their DIY undertakings. Projects like replacing light fixtures, replacing cabinet hardware and painting kept homeowners happier and generally more likely to stay on budget.

All of which is to say, trust yourself with a drawer pull, but maybe leave the bigger jobs to the professionals.
