7 revealing maps about Philly's demographics

The Census Bureau released a new mapping tool this week that lets users easily access maps with demographic data at the census-tract level.

We took a look at the bureau's maps of the Philadelphia area, checking out how the foreign-born population, education levels, home-ownership rates, household incomes and other data vary across the city.

The maps are revealing about differences among the city's neighborhoods: They show the areas of South Philadelphia that hold some of the city's highest concentrations of older residents, and the tiny percent of older residents living in University City; the Society Hill neighborhoods with the highest incomes, and the large swaths of the city that make significantly less; and the small percentage of owner-occupied homes in most of Center City.

All data displayed on the maps is from the 2008-2012 American Community Survey. That updated data set was also released this week.
