#PhillyFive Developing Stories: Sept. 10, 2014
Here's your daily look at five stories we're following:
1. ISIS strategy: President Barack Obama is set to outline his plans to defeat the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria in a prime-time speech this evening. He is prepared to use U.S. airstrikes in Syria against the jihadist group ISIS -- and many lawmakers from the Philadelphia region say they support intervention.
2. Kidnap trial: The prosecution has finished presenting its case at the trial for Christina Regusters, accused of kidnapping a 5-year-old girl from her West Philadelphia elementary school and sexually assaulting her. The defense is expected to call character witnesses, and the jury could hear closing arguments as early as today.
3. VA town hall: Philadelphia's troubled Veterans Affairs Medical Center is holding a town hall forum today at the University City hospital amid scrutiny over its scheduling practices.
4. Suicide prevention: Today is Worldwide Suicide Prevention Day, and SEPTA is posting signs with information about and the phone number for the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at the Norristown Transportation Center this morning. More signs are expected to be put up throughout the transit system over the next year.
5. Romney and Christie: Former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney is slated to attend a birthday fundraiser today for New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie -- who is weighing a 2016 White House run. The fundraiser is for the state Republican Party.
