States with the highest abortion rates

The abortion rate in the United States is declining, data released today by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention shows.

The CDC said the rate dropped from 16.2 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44 in 2001 to 14.6 in 2010. The total number of abortions performed also dropped during that time period, from 853,485 in 2001 to 765,651 in 2010.

Pennsylvania and New Jersey, however, both have abortion rates above the national average. Here are the states with the highest abortion rates, according to the CDC's data.

1. New York: 27.6 abortions per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44
2. Delaware: 21.1
3. Connecticut: 19.4
4. Rhode Island: 18.5
5. New Jersey: 16.7
6. Virginia: 15.7

7. Pennsylvania: 15.2

9. Massachusetts: 15
