The states with the most native-born residents

In some states, more than three-quarters of residents were born in that state. In others, fewer than 40 percent of residents are native-born. Here's a look, via a recent University of Virginia analysis, of which states (plus D.C.) have the most, and least, native-born residents, according to 2010 Census data.

The 10 states with the highest percent of residents who were born there (percent of residents who are natives in parenthesis):
1. Louisiana (78.8)
2. Michigan (76.6)
3. Ohio (75.1)
4. Pennsylvania (74)
5. Wisconsin (72.1)
6. Mississippi (71.9)
7. Iowa (71.7)
8. West Virginia (71.1)
9. Kentucky (70.3)
10. Alabama (70)

The 10 with the smallest percent of native-born residents:
42. Oregon (45.5)
43. Delaware (45.3)
44. New Hampshire (42.7) 
45. Colorado (42.5)
46. Wyoming (41.5)
47. Alaska (39)
48. Arizona (37.7)
49. Washington, D.C. (37.3)
50. Florida (35.2)
51. Nevada (24.3)

In New Jersey, 52.4 percent of residents were born in the state.
