Live blog: Army vs. Navy
It's the 110th edition of one of college football's greatest rivalries.
It's the Midshipmen's eighth straight win over the Black Knights. It's also the seventh straight Commander in Chief's Trophy for Navy.
And it means Temple will face UCLA in the EagleBank Bowl.
I did a video with Philly.com's sports staff interviewing tailgaters in the parking lots this morning. Be sure to check it out in the player at right.
How do you mark the passage of time?
One way to do it is to note the recurrence of annual events. I remember watching the 100th Army-Navy game at my parents' house, taking in all the pomp and circumstance surrounding the rivalry's centennial.
It is both easy and hard for me to believe that 10 years have passed since then. In some ways it feels like a long time ago, especially because that game was played at Veterans Stadium. But in other ways, this decade has flown by - especially when you think about what happened to the game and the country just under a year later.
So here we are, ready to take in the spectacle of the 110th meeting of the football teams from the United States Military Academy and the United States Naval Academy. Fans and players alike have come from West Point, Annapolis, and countless other places near and far.
It is a day about football, not politics. But nonetheless, we might at least take a moment to acknowledge that this game is not about us. It is about the cadets and midshipmen who will march on to the field in formation this morning.
Then they will return to the stands, and enjoy a few hours' distraction from their tasks at hand and to come.
The game will be televised on CBS starting at 2:30. Until then, I'll provide photos of the march-on. Please share your comments about the afternoon, but let's try to keep the discussion related to sports as best we can.
