Zaire Williams, who switched from running back to linebacker near the end of the preseason, is no longer with the Temple football team.

A person familiar with the situation confirmed an earlier report and told The Inquirer that Willliams "asked to leave the team."

Williams burst on the scene as a true freshman in 2013, rushing for 533 yards (5.3 average) and three touchdowns. He also caught 11 passes for 128 yards.

Last season, he appeared in just the opener against Vanderbilt, rushing for 17 yards on seven carries. Williams then was sidelined the rest of the season with a back injury.

He worked out at running back until late this training camp and before moving to linebacker. Temple coaches didn't think he would compete for playing time on offense but were optimistic he could help down the road on defense and special teams.

Williams is a South Jersey product who began his high school career at Cherokee before transferring to Timber Creek his senior year.
