Eagles, Dolphins to swap first rounders in trade
The Eagles' compensation in the trade with the Dolphins for cornerback Byron Maxwell and linebacker Kiko Alonso will be a move from the No. 13 overall pick in the first round of the draft to the No. 8 selection, a NFL source said.
There had been a report that the Eagles would also receive a fourth-round pick, but the source said the Eagles received only Miami's first rounder.
The Eagles officially announced the trade just after the start of the new league year at 4 p.m.
Maxwell's shoulder almost held up the deal. He didn't pass his original physical and had to be brought back for another exam on Wednesday morning. But he was cleared upon his second visit.
Moving up five spots in the first round opens a number of possibilities for the Eagles. They might be targeting a specific player -- possibly quarterback Carson Wentz -- or they might see a significant dropoff in talent after the first eight picks.
They also might be able to recoup their second-round selection -- lost in last year's Sam Bradford trade -- by trading back in the first round.
The Eagles' other trade -- sending running back DeMarco Murray to the Titans -- yielded the Eagles a fourth round swap with Tennessee. The Eagles move up 12 spots and will have the second pick on the third day of the draft.
