Eagles QBs deserve (a little) better than bottom ranking
Surprise, surprise, another media outlet has decided to lowball Philadelphia.
We're a few weeks away from NFL games of magnitude. Sounds like a perfect time for league quarterback rankings – or, in SportsOnEarth.com lingo, "NFL QB stability rankings."
And surprise, surprise, another media outlet has decided to lowball Philadelphia. Sports on Earth the other day listed the Eagles quarterbacks as the least stable in the NFL -- dead last. Blasphemy, I tell you, blasphemy.
I'm hardly a Sam Bradford/Mark Sanchez/Tim Tebow/Matt Barkley fan. I wish I could wash my hands of this group and start from scratch. However, to label this quartet as the laughingstock of the NFL is a flat-out crime.
Author Andrea Hangst said the following in ranking the Eagles: "Eagles quarterback Sam Bradford lands the team last on the list for several reasons. First, he's coming off of an ACL tear, the second of his career and not the only injury he has sustained in the last five years. Second, he's been reluctant to sign a long-term deal to remain in Philadelphia. Though a short-term deal is in the works that still won't provide him ideal job security. And third, with the offseason head coach Chip Kelly has had, there's no guarantee Kelly will be with the Eagles a year from now, which means Bradford's stop with the team could be a brief one."
Wow. Where to begin? What does Bradford's willingness to sign long term in Philadelphia have to do with 2015? He's paid handsomely at $13 million for this season. And the last time I checked, Kelly is under contract for two more years after this season and Jeffrey Lurie is very patient.
Where exactly do the Eagles rank at quarterback for 2015? It's pretty clear: They are anything but dead last in the NFL. For the sake of this exercise, I will use only the combination of Bradford and Sanchez when comparing the Eagles to other NFL franchises at quarterback.
Raise your hand if you'd sign up for what the Buffalo Bills have to offer -- Matt Cassell, E.J. Manuel and Tyrod Taylor? Houston coach Bill O'Brien is a "QB guy," but even he can't work miracles with what he has at his disposal, Ryan Mallett and Brian Hoyer. Cleveland is a Dumpster fire. Josh McCown? "Johnny Football?" Next!
Washington is a train wreck at the position. Kirk Cousins had a few moments, and Redskins fans felt they had found their guy. Turns out they were wrong. Robert Griffin III hasn't been remotely close to what he was as a rookie.
Next up, the New York Jets. Ryan Fitzpatrick looks like a Civil War re-enactment character and Geno Smith would laugh at Fitzpatrick's facial hair but his jaw is a bit sore these days. I feel bad for Jets coach Todd Bowles, who could do some real damage if he had anything close to an NFL quarterback at MetLife Stadium.
Now, the debate begins. Are the Eagles more stable with Bradford or Nick Foles? St. Louis gave the former Eagles QB a two-year extension through 2017, but it was hardly a major financial commitment.
Tennessee has Marcus Mariota and Zach Mettenberger. Depending on your "Do The Deal" stance from the early spring, this duo is debatable.
The Eagles, obviously, lack a definitive franchise guy at the helm. However, they are in better shape than five to seven teams in this league, and maybe even a few more. With Chip Kelly's system, tempo and ability to make average quarterbacks look above average, it's without question that the Eagles are in better shape at QB than 32nd.
