Former Eagles LB Seth Joyner now fills his days cursing out children

Three-time Pro Bowl linebacker Seth Joyner has been a Sports Illustrated Player of the Year. As an Eagle, he once played in a Monday Night game with a 102-degree fever and logged eight solo tackles. His reputation is one of intensity.

These days, Joyner coaches American Youth Football in Tempe, Arizona, where a video on TMZ shows him having a somewhat raucous, one-sided exchange with his team:

"I'll tell them we'll just forfeit the f****** game and we'll just leave right now. Tell me! Tell me, 'cause that's not football! You're walking around and they're running! If you don't want to play, tell me! So I can stop wasting my time and yours!"

On the one hand, screaming and cursing at kids is always alarming, or "friggin' ridiculous" as the guy working the camera suggests. On the other, as a glimpse into his coaching that does not provide the context of his entire tenure with the team, it sounds pretty similar to other speeches I've heard kids' - namely football - coaches give to their teams.

Sometimes I was on those teams. In fact, I think I was only ever on terrible football teams. There's a reason this is registering so clearly.

Coaches yell when they're not happy. His problem seems to be with a lack of hustle, and you know what? Those kids probably respect the hell out of him.

"The kids are terrified of him. He routinely berates them. The guy is terrible."

Huh. Well, presumably the children's parents are stepping in to remedy the situation. Won't somebody please think of the children, and such.

"Do I lose control from time to time?  Absolutely." Joyner says he's spoken with several parents about his coaching methods -- and says "most are completely OK with it."

Some teams bond over their shared animosity toward an antagonistic coach, but apparently this team has not. At least Joyner isn't ordering them to injure their opponents.
