Kiko Alonso out with a left knee injury; Mychal Kendricks out with a left hamstring injury

Eagles linebacker Kiko Alonso left Sunday's game against the Dallas Cowboys with a left knee injury and will not return.

Eagles linebackers Kiko Alonso and Mychal Kendricks were injured Sunday in the first half of a 20-10 loss to the Dallas Cowboys. Neither player returned.

Alonso has a left knee injury. Kendricks has a left hamstring injury. Coach Chip Kelly did not have updates on either player's status after the game. He said he probably won't know about either player until Monday.

Alonso is due for an MRI exam on the knee on Monday. He missed all of last season with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in the same knee he injured on Sunday. He had tendinitis in the knee during the preseason.

Kendricks was hurt while he ran deep downfield in coverage. He immediately grabbed his hamstring after the play.

Kendricks and Alonso are part of a rotation with DeMeco Ryans and are also the two linebackers who play in the Eagles' nickel formation. With both players out, the team needed to make adjustments.

"We had to scramble because we lost them both in a short period of time," defensive coordinator Bill Davis said. "We activated our dime package on the sideline. We hadn't practiced that in about two weeks, but guys did a great job filling in."

The Eagles gave third-round pick Jordan Hicks more playing time, including using him as the dime linebacker. Hicks surrendered a 39-yard pass, but he also recorded a sack, a forced fumble, and was credited with seven tackles. That tied Kendricks and Malcolm Jenkins for the team lead.

"I thought Jordan did a nice job - especially in that situation, when two guys go down" coach Chip Kelly said. "He's primarily a special-teams player for us, but when you only dress four guys on game day, you have to be ready to go."

Marcus Smith out

Linebacker Marcus Smith was inactive on Sunday even though he was a full participant in practice last week and was probable for the game. Smith, the Eagles' 2014 first-round pick, missed Week 1 with a hamstring injury.

The other inactive players were quarterback Stephen Morris, wide receiver Seyi Ajirotutu, cornerback Denzel Rice, offensive lineman Julian Vandervelde, offensive lineman Dennis Kelly, and defensive end Brandon Bair.

Ajirotutu was ruled out because of a concussion and an elbow injury. Running back Kenjon Barner was active in Ajirotutu's place but did not enter the game.

The Eagles used offensive lineman Josh Andrews for the first time on Sunday. He played on special teams.

Extra points

Cody Parkey connected on a 46-yard field goal and an extra point after missing a potential game-winning field in Week 1. . . . The Eagles honored the late Eagles great Chuck Bednarik. Bednarik's wife, Emma, served as the team's honorary captain.
