LeSean McCoy backs out of Pro Bowl with injury

Eagles running back LeSean McCoy was excused from participating in the Pro Bowl on Jan. 25, an NFL source said.

Eagles running back LeSean McCoy was excused from participating in the Pro Bowl on Jan. 25, an NFL source said.

The NFL is expected to make the move official and add an alternative in McCoy's place. Ravens running back Justin Forsett already took Houston tailback Arian Foster's spot on the roster.

The official reason for McCoy's withdrawal was an injury, although it isn't considered serious, per the source. He suffered a knee injury in the season finale at the New York Giants, but the injury wasn't deemed significant at the time.

McCoy will still be in Phoenix before the Pro Bowl and during the week leading up to the Super Bowl on Feb. 1. He is slated to host a Pro Bowl party the night before the game.

McCoy was one of five Eagles to be initially selected to the Pro Bowl. Tackle Jason Peters, center Jason Kelce, linebacker Connor Barwin and returner Darren Sproles were the others. Guard Evan Mathis was added to the squad after the Saints' Jahri Evans backed out.

Kicker Cody Parkey, a first alternate, is expected to make the team when either Stephen Gostkowski of the Patriots or Adam Vinatieri of the Colts backs out after Sunday's AFC championship game.

The Steelers' Le'Veon Bell, the Chiefs' Jamaal Charles, the Seahawks' Marshawn Lynch and the Cowboys' DeMarco Murray were the other Pro Bowl running backs. Eddie Lacy of the Packers, Jeremy Hill of the Bengals and Lamar Miller of the Dolphins are possible alternatives for McCoy.

McCoy rushed for 1,319 yards -- third best in the league -- on 312 carries (4.2 avg.).

He has two years left on his contract, but McCoy's $12 million cap number for 2015 is the highest on the Eagles. He seemed open to restructuring his contract after this season, but sources close to McCoy say that he wouldn't be willing to take a pay cut.
